Replacing a 70A alternator (V-belt) with a 105A alternator (multi-ribbed belt) in a 2000 Honker with a 4CTi90 engine.

Due to the large number of additional electrical devices in some of our honkers (including additional batteries), we were looking for a solution to the problem of insufficient charging.

A large part of our honkers are of the 2000-2005 vintage and still have a 70 amp alternator of the old type, driven by a V-belt. Newer units are already factory-equipped with 105 amp alternators (multi-ribbed belt), and hence the idea to replace the charging system in older cars with a newer type.

The operation is not just about replacing the alternator itself. It is necessary to replace the pulleys from those adapted for the V-belt to those adapted for the multi-ribbed belt, and to upgrade the mounting system itself.

Motorpol came to the rescue, which, at our request, prepared the kits necessary to make such a conversion (they are now in their offer).

First, remove the old alternator along with the pulleys and mount.

The photo shows the components of the old and new charging system.
Old and new pulley.

Installation of new pulleys and mounts. It is easy to see that the new system is more complicated than the old one. The next steps of the assembly can be seen in the photos below:

Replacing the alternator significantly improves charging, and the difference is most noticeable in vehicles equipped with two batteries.
